In a recent interview with Forbes, Daniel B. Odess, President of GlobalPro Recovery, was asked his advice on how to get a fair claim payment from a hurricane claim.
“We’re still in storm season, so homeowners should realize it’s more important to file a claim correctly than quickly,” says Odess. “Otherwise you may file one with errors in it and get denied — or get denied down the road when another hurricane hits. The most important thing you can do is to hire a licensed and bonded public claims adjuster to help you file your claim. They know what to look for and how to report it.”
Odess’s firm, now working with victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, helped has helped local businesses and government agencies recover more than $20,000,000 in losses after Hurricanes Irene, Sandy, and Katrina. A [Public] adjuster is particularly valuable in figuring out whether damage was caused by wind or water, which may be crucial if you don’t have a flood policy, says Odess. “In one home that was totaled after Hurricane Sandy, we were able to prove that the wind – not the flood — had lifted up the roof and sent it flying,” says Odess, who has a degree in engineering. “The homeowner wouldn’t have been covered for that damage otherwise.”
