You should check your policy for reporting requirements – it is not always your insurance agent – and be sure all interested insurers are notified. Notify your insurance provider promptly (not immediately). For Flood, proof of loss is due within 60 days of loss (not reporting). Flood is covered by NFIP , not your insurance company. Verbally make the claim with general information. You are not an expert and nothing requires you to email or fill out forms. Access the entire property before the insurance company inspects. Always make your property available for inspection. For hurricanes, check Duties in the Event of a Loss or Damage.
Describe & Document
Document your loss by taking numerous photos and videos of all affected and damaged areas and personal property. Take videos and photos from different angles. Do not include commentary in the video. Describe your damage very simply e.g. water damage. Avoid using words that could prejudice your claim recovery. Take notes and create an incident report of what occurred before vendors arrive. Keep an orderly accounting of expenses and hourlies. Prove your damages, not coverage. Develop a chain of custody for your insurance company by retaining receipts, information, etc.
Before you call your insurance company. Before you sign any vendor contract especially if it contains an AOB or direction of pay. Before you decide to rebuild.
